Excerpt from exhibition publication:
For De Spelonk, Marjolein Witte (Eindhoven, 1979) has created an installation composed of angular shapes and vibrant graphic patterns. The work began with the concept of a root system moving through space in search of nourishment—mirroring how individuals seek diverse sources to sustain a healthy life.
Typically, Witte approaches her projects with a clear, structured plan. However, in this instance, she allowed her intuition to guide her process. The pentagonal floor plan of De Spelonk shaped the installation’s foundation, from which the structure “grew” organically. Textual elements and ceramics were integrated into the piece, resulting in what Witte describes as an architectural self-portrait.
The installation, titled Construction of Becoming, was created at the invitation of De Spelonk, a street gallery established in 2020 within the home of Roeland Merks and Bart Dirks in The Hague. The gallery shares its passion for contemporary art with passersby, whether they are strolling casually or cycling by intentionally to view the works. This is the gallery’s eighth exhibition, visible from the sidewalk, bike path, and street.
